8:20 Keynote: Why Green is Good for California Business

The growing trend in the US market is to become environmentally conscientious, as companies respond to consumer interest in environmental issues and consumers demand more environmentally friendly products and services. Assembly member Jared Huffman will talk about why going green is good for business in terms of the ecological, social and economic benefits. Central to his talk will be AB32 legislation and other current and forthcoming legislation – its potential for giving California businesses a chance to lead a change in the way we conduct business, the way we innovate and design products, and the way we think about the role of business in society. Learn what is available and changing in the private sector to create more dynamic and sustainable global and local economies.

Pic Walker, environmental advocate and sustainability consultant, will tell the story of the journey the world's largest retailer is on to make itself more sustainable. Beginning with gaining senior executive alignment and building a strategy from the grassroots to developing Sustainable Value Networks and driving implementation, Walker will highlight significant steps taken to shift the mindset of Wal-mart from obligation to opportunity. He will discuss the progress Wal-mart has made on its sustainability goals and barriers to meeting those goals. Looking into the future, as the journey continues to unfold, Walker will touch on Wal-mart's integration, expansion, and the implications for suppliers, customers, employees and -- someday soon, China.
